The Tongue

Sometimes I’m silly and full of madness

sometimes of sickness deceit and sadness

I facilitate fellowship and chatter of all kinds.

I protect you from evil and tell what is fine.

I build up and strengthen many a names,

but I can destroy if I am not tame.

When I am young I’m entertainingly garbled

when old dry and slow, making hard to swallow.

Sometimes I am rude and very offending

Others I’m sweet and my knee bending.

I’m in the presence of danger at every turn

but my work is productive and easy to learn.

The power I wield I cannot measure

When used uprightly I am a treasure.

I can be the traitor among you, within your midst

But I am present at every kiss.

Who am I?
